Atlantic pollock is found from Chesapeake Bay to northeastern Canada and throughout northern Europe, including Iceland and the Faroe Islands. The Gulf of Maine is a traditional hot spot. Since 1984, however, the U.S. fishery has been restricted to a fraction of the stock in areas of the Gulf of Maine and Georges Bank, west of a line designating U.S. and Canadian fishing zones. U.S. catches are managed by seasonal area closures, gear restrictions and minimum size limits. The Canadian fishery is managed by quota. Atlantic pollock are harvested with trawls, gillnets and longlines. Much of the U.S. market for Atlantic pollock has been displaced by Alaska pollock.
