ARCTIC SEAS, L.L.C.
Seafood Information

Fish:  Cod,Pacific
Market Name:  Pacific Cod
Scientific Name:  Gadus macrocephalus
The Pacific cod fishery extends from British Columbia to the Okhotsk Sea (inside Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula) and south to Korea. The Bering Sea and western Gulf of Alaska are major cod grounds. The United States produces about 60 percent of the global catch of Pacific cod. Russia produces 30 percent. Slightly smaller than Atlantic cod, to which it is related, Pacific cod is caught by trawls, longlines and pots. Management of Alaska's cod fishery is split between the state and the North Pacific Fishery Management Council (the state primarily manages smaller vessels that take cod with longlines or pots). Overall harvests are managed by a quota, plus seasonal, area and gear restrictions. Canada's trawl fishery for Pacific cod is managed via individual quotas. Participation by Canadian hook-and-liners is unrestricted, though that fishery is governed by weekly trip limits and a fleet-wide harvest cap.
