Seafood Information

Fish:  Flounder,rock-sole
Market Name:  Rock sole
Scientific Name:  Pleuronectes bilineatus
Formerly known by the Latin name Lepidopsetta bilineata, rock sole is found from Southern California to the Bering Sea and from Russia's Sea of Okhotsk south through Korea to the Sea of Japan. Moderately common in central California, it is more abundant to the north, especially north of British Columbia. Rock sole prefers pebbly or semi-rocky bottom (hence the name), in depths ranging to 600 ft. Most, however, is harvested in waters no deeper than 350 ft, and nearly all commercial landings are made with trawl nets. Rock sole harvests are managed by two federal councils (one for Alaska and one for the Lower 48), and by Canada's Department of Fisheries and Oceans. Catches are regulated by seasons, gear restrictions, area limits and quotas. Most rock sole harvested by Russia and Japan is consumed in-country.
