Seafood Information

Fish:  Haddock
Market Name:  Haddock
Scientific Name:  Melanogrammus aeglefinus
Similar to Atlantic cod but smaller, haddock is found on both sides of the North Atlantic. Highest concentrations off the U.S./Canada coast occur on Georges Bank and in the Gulf of Maine. Haddock is also found throughout northern Europe, especially Norway and Iceland. Populations are higher and catches are greater in Europe, where haddock is revered as a fish-and-chips dish and as a cold-smoked product -the famous finan haddie invented in Scotland over a century ago. Haddock is taken primarily with trawls (though longlines and gillnets are also used) in depths of 150 to 700 ft.
