Dozens of species of spiny lobsters roam the shallow waters of tropical, subtropical and temperate oceans worldwide and in cold waters of the Southern Hemisphere. They are found in the western Atlantic from North Carolina to Brazil and the eastern Atlantic from England to North Africa. In the North Pacific, spiny lobsters range from Southern California to Mexico and Hawaii and in the South Pacific off South Africa, New Zealand and Australia. Spiny lobsters are taken in traps. Catches are regulated by a variable mix of size limits, quotas, trap limits, seasons and limited entry. A great number of spiny lobsters are shipped around the world live. The rest are sold as frozen tails.
