Atlantic ocean perch is not perch. It's a rockfish that travels in large schools in deep water. Often marketed as redfish, this is the only rockfish to inhabit the Atlantic (more than 60 rockfish species inhabit the Pacific, including a close cousin, the Pacific ocean perch). Atlantic ocean perch are distributed from Norway to Georges Bank. In Europe, the largest schools are found off Iceland and between Iceland and Greenland. In the west, they are most available from Labrador to Maine. Fishermen harvest ocean perch with trawl nets. Catches on both sides of the Atlantic are governed by gear restrictions, size limits, seasons and quotas. During the early 1940s, landings in the Gulf of Maine exceeded 60,000 tons. They are but a fraction of that today and are strictly monitored as part of a comprehensive, multispecies federal management plan. Canadian harvests are divided among four districts that have separate stocks and separate seasons.
