Market Name:  Pink salmon, red salmon
Scientific Name:  Oncorhynchus gorbuscha
Pink salmon is found throughout a broad range on both sides of the North Pacific, from Puget Sound to Alaska and from Russia to North Korea, including the Bering Sea. This is the smallest and most abundant of all salmon species harvested in Alaska. Males are called "hump-backs" at maturity, when they devel( a large dorsal hump. Pinks are taken with gillnets and seines and by trolling. They are not farmed. The United States and Russia contribute about equally to global harvests of pink salmon, which increased steadily to a record high of more than 400 tons in the mid'90s. Most pink salmon winds up in cans, partly to its habit of showing up in huge schools during short periods of time. Some pinks, however, are offered fresh in ethnic markets. They are also the focus of vigorous marketing campaigns, especially by Alaska, that generally focus on wider distribution of fresh and frozen salmon products plus development of value-added offerings.
