Market Name:  Tuna, yellowfin tuna, Pacific yellowfin, ahi
Scientific Name:  Thunnus albacares
Yellowfin tuna is found worldwide in tropical and temperate seas. It is primarily harvested by purse seines and pole and line, though some is taken on handlines and longlines. Most yellowfin is harvested in open ocean. Yellowfin comprises about 35 percent of the world tuna catch, and a quarter of the yellowfin harvest comes from the Eastern Tropical Pacific (ETP), bounded by Chile, California and Hawaii. Other major fishing grounds include the Western Pacific, Indian Ocean and Atlantic Ocean (especially along the west coast of Africa). Latin American purse seiners, mainly from Ecuador, Mexico and Venezuela, garner most of the ETP harvest. Purse seiners from the United States, Taiwan, Korea and Japan prowl the Western Pacific, which provides the largest global harvest of the tuna complex (primarily yellowfin and skipjack). Tuna is often canned in countries other than those that harvested it. Top canning countries exporting tuna to the United States include Thailand, the Philippines and Indonesia.
